Democrats from Commonwealth countries meet to discuss ‘Government and Opposition’

Democrats from 13 Commonwealth countries - including senior parliamentarians, party managers and representatives of civil society - will meet in Maputo, Mozambique, from 26 to 30 January 2004to discuss the contribution of Government and Opposition to the democratic process. They will highlight best practice and make proposals for future action.

The Opening Session of the workshop, from 9 to10 a.m. on Monday 26 January, will take place at the Assembleia da República (National Parliament), Maputo, and will be open to the media.  Speakers will include:

The workshop has been organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat, in co-operation with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the SADC Parliamentary Forum and FECIVMozambique, a democracy NGO.  On Friday 30 January there will also be a half-day meeting between the workshop participants and invited guests from Mozambique's parliament, civil society and the media.
