Commonwealth Secretary-General to visit East and Southern Africa

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will leave on Wednesday, 8 October for visits to the United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and South Africa, where he will discuss preparations for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting taking place in Abuja, Nigeria in December and topics of current Commonwealth interest.
While in Tanzania on 8-12 October, the Secretary-General will meet with President Benjamin Mkapa. Mr McKinnon is also scheduled to visit Zanzibar, where he will call on President Amani Abeid Karume and meet the Co-Chairpersons and Members of the Joint Presidential Service Commission. He will also address a meeting of the donors to the Mwafaka (the peace agreement between the two major political parties in Zanzibar) in Dar es Salaam.
In Uganda the Secretary-General will meet with President Yoweri Museveni and members of the Ugandan Government on 12-13 October.
Mr McKinnon will be in Kenya on 13-14 October, where he will meet President Mwai Kibaki and senior ministers.
The Secretary-General will also visit South Africa where he has accepted an invitation to address the Foreign Correspondents' Association of South Africa on the morning of 15 October 2003 on "The Commonwealth: A Partner for Democracy and Development in the 21st Century".
