Ministers agree greater participation of young people in Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting
29 May 2003
Young people will play a much larger role in the decision-making processes of the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP), Commonwealth Youth Ministers have decided. This was agreed during the Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting taking place in Gaborone, Botswana, from 27 to 30 May 2003.
The Hon Thebe Mogami, Minister of Labour and Home Affairs of Botswana, who is hosting the Meeting, announced today that from now on, each of the CYP's national youth representatives may participate in meetings of Commonwealth Youth Ministers, under the leadership of the head of their national delegation.
"I welcome this decision to enable youth leaders in Commonwealth countries to enhance the important contribution they make in shaping the youth policies and programmes of the Commonwealth," he said.
Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General Mrs Florence Mugasha, who is co-chairing the meeting with Mr Mogami, said:
"Since its inception 30 years ago, the CYP has enabled young people to share their views and participate in decision-making in the Commonwealth. The historic agreement reached at this meeting means that, from today, young people from across the Commonwealth will have a stronger voice at ministerial meetings, and can bring their energies and ideas to bear on the work of the Commonwealth ever more effectively."
