COMMONWEALTH FOREIGN MINISTERS TO MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME

10 September 2002

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will convene a meeting of Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers on 14 September 2002 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This will be the first ever such meeting and follows a decision taken by Commonwealth Heads of Government at their summit in Coolum last March that the Secretary-General should 'explore opportunities for greater interaction amongst Commonwealth Foreign Ministers'.

Mr McKinnon said "This is an important meeting for the Commonwealth and will present Foreign Ministers with an opportunity to review important developments in the Commonwealth and the outcome of recent meetings such as the G-8 Summit as well as other issues of concern, including terrorism and NEPAD."

Foreign Ministers will also assess the value of meeting regularly to discuss matters of collective interest.

Note to Editors:

The meeting will be followed by a press briefing at 1 p.m. at the Ecosoc Chambers at the United Nations Secretariat. For further information contact Joel Kibazo on + 44 7740 450901 or the Communications and Public Affairs Division + 44 (0) 20 7747 6385/2.
