Commonwealth Secretary-General: Support will grow for International Criminal Court

12 April 2002

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Don McKinnon, has welcomed the news that the International Criminal Court will be established on July 1, 2002.
Mr McKinnon said today: "The establishment of the International Criminal Court is a historic step which we hope will herald a new era in dealing with war crimes and crimes against humanity. I am convinced that this Court will become an integral part of the international landscape."
The Court's establishment was ensured when ten more countries deposited their ratifications of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court yesterday. This surpassed the critical threshold of 60 ratifications.

Note to Editors:
At the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Coolum, Australia, member countries of the Commonwealth were encouraged to accede to the Rome Statute. To date, 35 of 54 Commonwealth countries have signed the Statute and 17 of the 66 ratifications are by Commonwealth countries.
