Commonwealth Team to be present in St Vincent and the Grenadines for General Election

Commonwealth Secretary-General Mr Don McKinnon is sending a team from the Commonwealth Secretariat to be present as his representatives in St Vincent and the Grenadines during the general election. The team will be led by Mr Jon Sheppard, Director, Political Affairs Division, and will report to the Secretary-General on its return to London. The election is to be held on 28 March 2001.
In making the announcement today, Mr McKinnon said the Secretariat team was being sent to St Vincent and the Grenadines in response to an invitation from Prime Minister Arnhim Eustace to observe the elections.
Note to Editors:
The last elections in St Vincent and the Grenadines were held in June 1998 and the next were due to be held before June 2004. Following public demonstrations and opposition protests, a CARICOM-brokered agreement was reached to hold elections not later than 31 March 2001.
