Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group to meet in London

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration (CMAG) will meet in Marlborough House, London, on Wednesday, 30 January 2002.
The Group comprises Ministers from Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados (Vice-chair), Botswana (Chair), Canada, Malaysia, Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
CMAG's mandate from Commonwealth Heads of Government is to address serious or persistent violations of the Commonwealth's fundamental political values as contained in the Harare Commonwealth Declaration. These relate to democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms, the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary , and good governance.
The Group will review developments in the countries within its remit, namely Fiji Islands, Pakistan, Solomon Islands and Zimbabwe. The Ministers will also consider and approve CMAG's report to the Commonwealth Heads of Government who are due to meet in Coolum, Australia in March 2002.
