Hong Kong-Based Professional Associations and NGOs to Continue Association with Their Commonwealth Counterparts

20 October 1997

Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, announced today that following his consultations with the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mr Tung Chee Hwa, professional associations and non-governmental organisations in the HKSAR will be able to maintain and develop relations with their Commonwealth counterparts.

Chief Anyaoku said: "I am very pleased that the new Hong Kong Administration has confirmed that as provided in the Basic Law, the professional and non-governmental groups in the HKSAR will be able to continue to work with their counterparts in the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth is an organisation which holds high the importance of people-to-people contacts and particularly welcomes this opportunity for professional and cultural bodies in Hong Kong, China and the Commonwealth to remain in touch.

"The Commonwealth comprises 54 countries from every region of the world and is characterised by its cultural, social, economic and political diversity. Hong Kong's continued participation in some non-governmental Commonwealth activities will benefit both sides and ensure that the professional bodies and non-governmental organisations in the HKSAR remain in contact with their counterparts in other parts of the world."
