Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group to meet in London, 3-4 September 2001

The next meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration (CMAG) will be held at Marlborough House in London on 3-4 September 2001. It last met on 19-20 March 2001.
At the forthcoming meeting, the Group will finalise its Report to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The Report will contain an account of CMAG's preoccupations since the Durban CHOGM in November 1999, and will include a set of conclusions and recommendations to Heads of Government covering violations of the Harare Principles and latest developments in the countries which have been discussed by CMAG during the last two years. The Group will also update itself upon the progress on CMAG's future role made by the High Level Review Group set up by Heads of Government at Durban.

The meeting will conclude by Tuesday afternoon, 4 September, with a press conference (estimated time 5pm) addressed by the CMAG Chairperson, the Hon Lt-Gen M S Merafhe, MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Botswana, Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon and other Ministers in the Group.
CMAG was established by Commonwealth Heads of Government at their meeting in Auckland in 1995. The Group deals with serious or persistent violations of the Harare Commonwealth Declaration in member countries and recommends measures for collective Commonwealth action. The Group is convened by the Commonwealth Secretary-General and presently comprises the Foreign Ministers of Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, Botswana (Chairperson), Canada, Malaysia (represented by the Special Envoy of the Prime Minister), Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Currently, Fiji Islands and Pakistan are suspended from the councils of the Commonwealth.
