Commonwealth Secretary-General salutes Jordan's new leader

7 February 1999

Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku said today that King Hussein of Jordan will be remembered in the Commonwealth as a protagonist for peace. In a message of condolence to his successor King Abdullah, the Commonwealth Secretary-General wished Jordan's new leader strength and wisdom in the times ahead. The Secretary-General said:

I heard the news of King Hussein's death with profound sadness. He bore his long illness with typical fortitude and dignity and his loss will be felt far beyond Jordan's borders.

To his people he remained a voice of calm and wise leadership, who safely steered his nation through times of great trial and tribulation. But to the wider world - and to many in the Commonwealth - he will be remembered and revered as a protagonist for peace, as a man of rare greatness who strained every fibre of his being to bring peace to a deeply troubled region.

The ultimate tribute to his memory will be for those to whom falls the task to build a lasting peace upon the foundation, which with such courage and vision, he helped to lay. On behalf of the 54 countries of the Commonwealth I salute you, his anointed successor, and wish you strength and wisdom in the times ahead.
