Maldives Foreign Minister first recipient of the Commonwealth - Oxford Fellowship
5 March 1999
The Hon Fathulla Jameel, Foreign Minister of the Maldives Republic, has been awarded the first Commonwealth Visiting Fellowship at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. Mr Jameel will take up his Fellowship at Oxford this summer.
The Commonwealth Visiting Fellowship was established as a result of the 1996 visit to the Centre by the Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku. In a public lecture on the management of diversity in the contemporary world, the Secretary-General emphasised that the Islamic tradition was an important component of the diverse cultural heritage of the Commonwealth. It is intended to help scholars from any part of the Commonwealth pursue their study of Islam and the Islam world. Several Commonwealth governments have contributed to an endowment fund which, from 1999, will support short study visits to Oxford by leading figures in the Commonwealth.
Mr Jameel has been Minister of External Affairs since 1978. Prior to his appointment, he was the Permanent Representative to the UN and his country's representative on the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank. Mr Jameel was educated at Al-Azhar University and in Cairo and Australia.
