Commonwealth Summit to be held in Durban in November
12 March 1999
Heads of Government from the 54 member Commonwealth will meet in Durban, South Africa, for their biennial summit from 12-15 November.
A joint announcement made in London and Pretoria by the South African Government, as host, and the Commonwealth Secretariat said the 1999 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) would take place at the International Conference Centre in Durban from 12-15 November. The traditional retreat during the CHOGM will be held during the weekend 13-14 November..
Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku said: "I am delighted that the CHOGM will take place at the International Conference Centre in Durban. This is an excellent facility which recently played host to the summit meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement. I have no doubt that the Government of South Africa will make excellent arrangements for the meeting and thus create the conditions that will enable Heads of Government to successfully steer the Commonwealth into the new millennium.
"It is entirely appropriate that this year's meeting which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth should take place for the first time in South Africa, a country which has occupied a central place in the Commonwealth's endeavours over many years."
