Commonwealth Heads of Government to Meet in Edinburgh in October 1997

Commonwealth Heads of Government will hold their next biennial meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 24-27 October 1997, according to a simultaneous announcement made today by the Commonwealth Secretariat and the British Government. In a statement, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, noted that this would be the first time in two decades that Britain would play host to a Commonwealth summit.

"I am delighted that the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is to be held in Britain after a period of twenty years. I am confident that the 1997 Edinburgh CHOGM will mark another historic milestone in the evolution of the modern Commonwealth, and that its decisions will lend even greater vigour and vitality to the association".

The Edinburgh CHOGM will open on Friday 24 October 1997 and end on Monday 27 October 1997. It will include a private Retreat for Heads of Government during the weekend. The detailed format of the Meeting will be discussed by Commonwealth Senior Officials when they next meet in London in October 1996.

Note to Editors:
Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings are held every two years. The last CHOGM was held at Auckland, New Zealand, in November 1995. Originally, Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Meetings, as they were then known, were held biennially in London. The first summit outside Britain was held in Lagos in 1966, and with the exception of the 1977 London CHOGM, all Heads of Government Meetings since 1971 have been hosted by countries other than Britain: in chronological order, Singapore (1971), Ottawa (1973), Kingston (1975), Lusaka (1979), Melbourne (1981), New Delhi (1983), Nassau (1985), Vancouver (1987), Kuala Lumpur (1989), Harare (1991), Limassol (1993) and Auckland (1995).
