India - Pakistan* Tensions: Commonwealth Secretary-General Calls for Restraint

1 June 1999

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, who is in Nigeria for the inauguration of the newly elected democratic government, has expressed concern at the current heightening tensions between India and Pakistan*, two important member countries of the Commonwealth. These tensions threaten to vitiate the encouraging prospects generated by the Lahore Declaration of February 1999 issued by the Prime Ministers of Pakistan* and India. The Secretary-General earnestly calls for restraint to be exercised by all concerned.

*Following a military coup in October 1999, Pakistan has been suspended from the councils of the Commonwealth
