Commonwealth Secretariat Team to be present at Parliamentary and Presidential Elections in Malawi

9 June 1999

A six-member team of officials from the Commonwealth Secretariat will be present in Malawi as representatives of the Commonwealth Secretary-General during the Parliamentary and Presidential Elections which are to be held on Tuesday 15 June 1999. The team will be led by Mr K Srinivasan, Deputy Secretary-General (Political) and will report to the Secretary-General on their return to London. The mission is expected to be in Malawi from 10 to 17 June 1999.

The team was preceded by an advance party of two Secretariat officials who visited Malawi from 17-26 April 1999 to observe the preparations for the elections, including the registration of voters.

In making the announcement today, Chief Anyaoku said that the Secretariat team was being sent to Malawi in response to an invitation from the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, to observe the Parliamentary and Presidential Elections. Chief Anyaoku also said:

The Commonwealth attaches great importance to democratic processes and institutions in its member states. A Commonwealth Observer Group was in Malawi in 1994 when it made the transition from a one-party system of government to multi-party democracy. I believe that the presence of my representatives in Malawi for these elections will reinforce the democratic process in Malawi.
