British Deputy Prime Minister to Open Commonwealth Senior Officials Meeting

Britain's Deputy Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Michael Heseltine, will open the thirteenth Commonwealth Senior Officials Meeting which takes place in London on 29 and 30 October 1996. At this meeting, senior government officials from Commonwealth member countries will review progress in the implementation of the various decisions taken by Commonwealth Heads of Government at Auckland in 1995 and will take stock of developments since that meeting.
They will also consider the various arrangements proposed for the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting to be held in Edinburgh in October 1997. At the meeting, senior officials will focus on a special theme, 'The New Agenda for Diplomacy'. Sir David Hannay, Britain's former Permanent Representative to the United Nations has been invited as a guest speaker to stimulate discussion of the theme.
The Meeting will be held at the Commonwealth Institute in London and is expected to be chaired by Sir John Coles, Britain's Permanent Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku said today that he looked forward to productive discussions that would set the stage for a successful CHOGM at Edinburgh in 1997.
