Commonwealth Secretariat press release

Competitiveness strategies for the Commonwealth Caribbean

16 November 1999

The first Commonwealth training workshop on competitiveness strategies will take place in Barbados from November 22 to 25. Its aim is to strengthen the skills of government officials in the Commonwealth Caribbean to enable them to formulate successful national strategies for international competitiveness.

Another objective is to facilitate enterprise competitiveness through policy changes, and the workshop is also designed to be relevant to the needs of business associations who stand at the forefront of public-private relations, as well as enterprises concerned with industrial restructuring.

Themed 'Enterprise Competitiveness and Public Policies in the Caribbean', it will have more than 80 participants from all over the Caribbean.

Globalisation and the increased competition for foreign investment and exports have made such workshops necessary, said the Commonwealth Secretariat's Export and Industrial Development Division, who are organising the event in collaboration with the Government of Barbados and the Caribbean Export Development Agency. The workshop programme is based on a new Commonwealth Secretariat manual on competitiveness strategies due to be released in 2000.

Among other things, the curriculum of the workshop is expected to equip participants with up-to-date information on current opportunities for trade and foreign investment in the Caribbean and the international market place. It will also provide them with: tools to analyse the dynamics of national and enterprise competitiveness; best practices in economic reform, deregulation and industrial policy; and practical business strategies for enterprise restructuring and exporting.

One of the highlights of the programme will be a series of presentations by the Ministers of Trade and Industry of Barbados, Jamaica, St Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Similar workshops are to be held in Singapore in April 2000 and in Africa later that year.
