Commonwealth Secretary-General expresses concern at reported military coup in Sierra Leone
16 January 1996
The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has expressed grave concern at the news of today's military coup d'etat in Sierra Leone. In a statement issued in London, the Secretary-General said:
A Commonwealth Secretariat mission has just returned from Sierra Leone after very useful discussions with the Government, leaders of political parties and the Interim National Electoral Commission. The discussions confirmed the continuing commitment of the Government and all concerned to returning Sierra Leone to a democratic government through elections to be held early this year. Commonwealth Heads of Government have welcomed this commitment and are supporting the transition process in various practical ways. I earnestly hope, therefore, that the reported changes in Freetown will not mean a departure from this course. At a time of increasing attention to the principles enshrined in the Harare Commonwealth Declaration, any such departure would undoubtedly be viewed with dismay and disapproval throughout the Commonwealth.
