Commonwealth Mission to Visit The Gambia and Sierra Leone
5 January 1996
A mission from the Commonwealth Secretariat is to visit Sierra Leone and The Gambia next week as a follow-up to decisions taken recently by Commonwealth Heads of Government in New Zealand and an eight-strong Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, meeting in London.
The visits are being made following the decision by Commonwealth leaders at their summit in Auckland, New Zealand, in November last year to offer Commonwealth assistance to facilitate the transition to democracy in the two countries and the first meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) last month. CMAG was set up to deal with serious and persistent violations of the Commonwealth's 1991 Harare Declaration which articulated the Commonwealth's core political principles.
Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku said today that the mission would be led by Mr K Srinivasan, Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General (Political) and include Dr Moses Anafu, Assistant Director of the Secretariat's Political Affairs Division, and Mr Christopher Child, Chief Programme Officer in the Secretariat's Political Affairs Division. The Secretary-General said that the Commonwealth Secretariat team would visit Freetown, Sierra Leone, from 8-10 January and Banjul, The Gambia, from 10-13 January as a result of consultations with the two governments concerned. He added that, on its return, the mission would submit a report to him which he would then present to CMAG.
