Commonwealth Secretariat press release

Commonwealth Secretary-General Welcomes UK Education Plan

26 February 2001

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Don McKinnon, today welcomed the initiative by the Government of the United Kingdom to promote universal primary education in the Commonwealth.

Mr McKinnon said:

About half of the 130 million children worldwide who lack access to primary education live in Commonwealth countries. The admirable initiative launched by the Government of the United Kingdom reinforces the Commonwealth's commitment to quality education, as reaffirmed by Education Ministers at Halifax in November last year.

We in the Commonwealth Secretariat will continue to work with others towards achieving the international development targets; we recognise that even the best conceived policies will not meet these targets without adequate attention to education and health care. As a result of its experience, the Commonwealth is well placed to draw on the achievements and strengths of some countries to offer valuable lessons and best practice to others.

Note to Editors:
The Government of the United Kingdom today announced in London that it will launch a fund next year to speed the introduction of universal primary education in the Commonwealth. The Fund will be launched to mark the Jubilee Year of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
