Commonwealth Secretary-General on UK Zimbabwe
21 February 2001
Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon has seen the statement attributed to Mr Robin Cook, the Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, UK.
The Secretary-General, who is currently in West Africa, did receive a call from Mr Cook this morning, who raised with him his concerns over the situation in Zimbabwe. The Secretary-General shared the concern over recent developments.
A few weeks ago, the Secretary-General made a proposal to send a small Commonwealth Secretariat team to Zimbabwe to discuss how the Commonwealth could assist the Zimbabwe Government in resolving the land issue.
The Zimbabwe Government has accepted the proposal in principle but dates have yet to be confirmed for the visit by the team.
