Commonwealth Environment Ministers to Meet in Nairobi

6 February 2001

Commonwealth Ministers responsible for the environment and senior officials will meet in Nairobi, Kenya, on 7 February 2001 at the seventh meeting of the Commonwealth Consultative Group on Environment (CCGE). The meeting will discuss how the Commonwealth can support the World Summit on Sustainable Development, to be held in South Africa next year, and its review of progress after the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (also known as the Earth Summit), which was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The CCGE will also discuss the outcomes of a Commonwealth Workshop on Trade and Sustainable Development, which took place earlier this year in the United Kingdom. Ministers may also make recommendations to the High-Level Review Group on the Commonwealth's future role in addressing sustainable development and environment issues.

This meeting will be chaired by the Hon Seymour Mullings, Deputy Prime Minister of Jamaica, and the Rt Hon Michael Meacher, UK Minister for the Environment. The CCGE is the Commonwealth's primary intergovernmental forum on the environment and sustainable development issues. In Nairobi, the Commonwealth ministers and officials will also be attending the Global Environment Ministers Forum and the United Nations Environmental Programme Governing Council.

Note to Editors:
The World Summit on Sustainable Development, which will be held in South Africa next year, will assess the progress made in implementing agreements reached in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.
