Commonwealth Secretary-General to visit Canada for talks with Prime Minister Harper

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will visit Ottawa, Canada, from 30 September to 1 October 2007.

The Secretary-General is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Bernier on 1 October. He will brief them on preparations for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting which takes place in Uganda from 23 to 25 November 2007.

Mr McKinnon will also hold talks with Robert Greenhill, President of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

In 2005, the Secretariat and CIDA signed two grant agreements worth £214,000 (CAN$433,000) towards strengthening the participation of developing countries in trade negotiations, and enhancing the Secretariat’s work on evaluation and performance measurement.

The Secretary-General will also attend a lunch hosted by the Canadian government in his honour, before meeting with High Commissioners resident in Ottawa.

He will address the Royal Commonwealth Society of Canada at a private dinner on 30 September 2007.
