Commonwealth Secretariat press release

Commonwealth Secretary-General thanks former British Prime Minister Blair for outstanding service

29 June 2007

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon has thanked Mr Tony Blair for his service during his 10-year tenure as British Prime Minister.

The full text his letter reads:

“As your time as Prime Minister comes to an end today, I want to thank you most sincerely for your outstanding service to the Commonwealth.

One of your first major interactions with the Commonwealth upon your appointment in 1997 was to host the CHOGM in Edinburgh. This turned a fresh page of our organisation, with new initiatives to support business and civil society in the Commonwealth in particular. You and your Government showed once again how the unique relationship between the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth can evolve with the times, and be a positive force for global change.

The Commonwealth and the Commonwealth Secretariat will continue to work for democracy and development as the two major pillars of our work, buttressed by the values and principles that our 53 member countries share. The Commonwealth has tremendous networks and potential, and I hope we can work together in future.”
