Secretary-General to visit Southeast Asia

Trip includes Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will visit Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam during his tour of Southeast Asia.

The Secretary-General will be in Singapore on 19 April 2007 to hold talks with Deputy Prime Minister Professor S Jayakumar, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Foreign Minister George Yeo.

On 23 April, Mr McKinnon will deliver a speech at a conference on ‘Integrity and Governance: The National Mission’ at the Malaysian Institute of Integrity in Kuala Lumpur. His speech on ‘The cancer of corruption: the ideal of integrity’ will examine global efforts to eradicate corruption, from small bribes to million-dollar scandals.

The Secretary-General will be in Bandar Seri Begawan on 24 April for an audience with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam.

Mr McKinnon will be in Putrajaya from 25-26 April to hold talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Syed Jaafar Albar.

Discussions with the leaders of the three countries will include Commonwealth and regional issues, including the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Uganda in November, as well as the Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting in Guyana in October.

Mr McKinnon will also brief them on the work of the Commonwealth Commission on Respect and Understanding chaired by Nobel Laureate Professor Amartya Sen, which is exploring ways to promote harmony among faiths and communities, and the Committee on Commonwealth Membership headed by former Jamaican Prime Minister P J Patterson, which is focusing on membership criteria.
