2 April 2007

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon has appointed Eduardo del Buey, a diplomat from Canada, the Director of the Communications and Public Affairs Division and the organisation’s new Spokesperson

Mr del Buey, 54, will lead the Division whose main task is to promote greater global awareness of the work and the value of the Commonwealth and the Secretariat.

“Eduardo brings a wealth of experience in the field of media and public affairs and will be an important addition to the team,” Mr McKinnon said.

“I am delighted to join the Commonwealth Secretariat in this capacity. The Commonwealth does a lot to bring a spark to the lives of many and I’d like to help showcase this work,” Mr del Buey said.

Mr del Buey served as Director of External Relations and Public Information at the Organisation of American States (OAS) between 1999 and 2004. He was also adviser to the OAS Secretary General on strategic communications issues.

He left the OAS to join the Canadian Foundation for the Americas, (FOCAL) in Ottawa as Executive Director before his latest appointment.
