Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon has constituted an Expert Team to observe Parliamentary Elections in Lesotho scheduled to take place on 17 February 2007. The Team consists of three experts and two members of staff from the Commonwealth Secretariat.

The decision to send the Commonwealth Expert Team follows an invitation from the Government of Lesotho and the Independent Electoral Commission.
The experts will be briefed in the capital, Maseru, by the Independent Electoral Commission, representatives of political parties, civil society organisations, Commonwealth diplomats and other election observers. They will observe preparations for the Parliamentary Elections, the polling, counting and results processes; and the overall electoral environment.
Note to Editors
The members of the Expert Team will remain in Lesotho until Friday 23 February 2007. They will write a report and submit it to Commonwealth Secretary-General. The Secretary-General will then transmit the report to the Government of Lesotho, the Independent Electoral Commission and the political parties.
Thereafter, copies will be circulated to all Commonwealth Governments and then be made public.
The members of the Team have been invited in their individual capacities and the views they express regarding the elections will be their own and not those of their respective Governments or of the Commonwealth Secretariat.
