Secretary-General to consult with Caribbean leaders

28 June 2006

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will attend the 27th Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis, from 3 to 5 July 2006.

Speaking in London on the eve of his departure, the Secretary-General said: “The 12 Commonwealth CARICOM countries continue to play a key role in our 53-nation family. My agenda with Caribbean leaders is always full. It will cover preparations for the next Heads of Government Meeting in Uganda in November 2007 and the Commonwealth’s work in development, democracy building and achieving international trade justice.

“Closer to home, I shall be discussing how the Commonwealth can help with the social and economic challenges faced by the Caribbean. We are engaged with a number of member countries on election issues, and are working closely with Guyana as it goes to the polls later this year.”

Note to Editors:

Commonwealth CARICOM members are Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.
