Commonwealth Secretariat press release

Prince of Wales opens new Commonwealth Information Centre

7 February 2005

His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales opened a new Commonwealth Information Centre based at the Commonwealth Secretariat in Pall Mall, London today.

Speaking at the opening of the Information Centre, he said, "I am delighted that this new centre will serve to help more people to be aware of the good work of the Commonwealth. It should enable many more people to learn about this unique family and to learn about its programmes and its ideals".

The Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon welcomed The Prince of Wales to the Information Centre, which will become a valuable source of up-to-date information for journalists, students, researchers and the general public.

Speaking after the unveiling of the plaque to commemorate the visit, Mr McKinnon said, "We work on the basis that if we can help individual people in their lives, especially young people, we can make a difference. This information centre will be another Commonwealth window to the world, offering us a chance to spread the word about what we do".

The Prince of Wales spoke to Commonwealth Secretariat staff from various divisions within the organisation about their continuing work promoting good governance and democracy and assisting young people through the Commonwealth Youth Programme.
At the Information Centre, The Prince of Wales also launched a new website dedicated to teaching young people more about the Commonwealth. Using a computer mouse The Prince of Wales cut a virtual ribbon which revealed the new website. The Young Commonwealth website is likely to be accessed by millions of people around the Commonwealth's 53 member countries. The website can be found at http://www.youngcommonwealth.org/.
