Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) to Meet in New York

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration (CMAG) will hold its fourteenth meeting in New York on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 September 2000. CMAG's last regular meeting was held in London on 2 May 2000. It also met in a special session on 6 June to consider the situation in Fiji Islands and Solomon Islands.
CMAG will review the situation in Fiji Islands, The Gambia, Pakistan, Sierra Leone and Solomon Islands. CMAG will also receive presentations from the deposed Prime Minister of Fiji, Mr Mahendra Chaudhry, and from the Prime Minister of Fiji's interim Government, Mr Laisenia Qarase; as well as a report from Mr Abdul Sattar, the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, on his country's intentions with regard to a timetable for return to democratic rule.
The composition of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group is Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, Botswana, Canada, Malaysia, Nigeriaand the United Kingdom. The Foreign Ministers of Botswanaand Barbadosare Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of the Group respectively. It is convened by the Commonwealth Secretary-General. The Group's mandate from Heads of Government is to address serious or persistent violations of the fundamental political values of the Commonwealth, namely democracy, good governance, human rights and the rule of law, as established in the Harare Commonwealth Declaration.
