Commonwealth Secretariat press release

Commonwealth Secretary-General in Lesotho

28 July 2000

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Mr Don McKinnon, visited Maseru, Lesotho, on Thursday 27 July 2000.

Mr McKinnon's visit was a follow up to discussions held with Foreign Minister Tom Thabane at the recently concluded 36th ordinary summit of the Organisation of African Unity in Lomé, Togo.

The Secretary-General paid a courtesy call on King Letsie III and held discussions with the Prime Minister, Mr Pakalitha Mosisili, Mr Thabane, the Minister of Law and Constitutional Affairs, Mr Shakhane Mokhehle, as well as chairpersons of the Independent Electoral Commission, the Interim Political Authority, Heads of Diplomatic Missions and Senior Government Officials.

Discussions centred around the Commonwealth's continued engagement with the objective of sustaining and strengthening democracy, and in particular the need to ensure that the target of successfully conducting a credible election by May 2001 is met.

The Secretary-General was very encouraged by the tone and substance of the discussions and was left with the feeling that all parties connected with the process were determined to ensure a successful outcome.

Mr McKinnon introduced Professor Ade Adefuye, his new special envoy to Lesotho, who has remained behind to continue the process of consultations.
