Commonwealth Secretary-General to visit Lesotho

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Mr Don McKinnon, will make a one-day visit to Maseru, Lesotho on Thursday 27 July 2000.  The visit is a follow-up to discussions which the Secretary-General held with the Foreign Minister of Lesotho, Mr M T Thabane, during the 36th Ordinary Summit of the Organisation of African Unity in Lomé, Togo 10 - 12 July 2000. 

The Secretary-General will pay a courtesy call on King Letsie III and hold discussions with the Prime Minister, Mr Pakalitha Mosisili, the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Law, Mr S K Mokhehle, the Co-Chairpersons of the Interim Political Authority and opposition leaders.

The Commonwealth observed the 1998 General Elections in Lesotho. Since then, it has been working in co-operation with SADC, UNDP, and the Governments of Denmark and Canada to strengthen the independence and credibility of the Independent Electoral Commission as well as to increase public confidence in the electoral process.  The next general elections have been scheduled for May 2001.
