Nauru Joins Joint Office for Commonwealth Small States in New York

4 February 2000

Nauru, one of the Commonwealth's smallest nations, became a full participant of the Joint Office for Commonwealth Small States in New York in January 2000. This restores membership of the Small States Joint Office to nine, following the departure of Saint Lucia late last year.

The Kingdom of Tonga has also been temporarily provided with office space for a period of six months from January 2000.

Speaking of Nauru's participation of the Joint Office, Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku stated: "The Commonwealth continues to provide valuable support to its smallest member states as a means of facilitating their representation at the United Nations. The major donors and other contributors to the Joint Office should be congratulated for making this possible and I am encouraged by their continuing support".

Nauru became a full member of the Commonwealth on 1 May 1999 after being a Special Member of the association for nearly 31 years. The small island republic was also recently admitted to full membership of the United Nations.

Note to Editors:
The Joint Office was established in 1983 following an initiative taken by Australia. The office is funded by annual contributions from Australia, Britain, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, India and Singapore. Cyprus has also made a one-off contribution to the Joint Office. Participating governments are provided with a 'core' office space and share common facilities such as research services. Office space in excess of the core amount is paid for by the respective tenant countries.

Participating governments are Belize, Dominica, The Gambia, Grenada, Nauru, Maldives, Seychelles, Samoa and the Solomon Islands.
