Commonwealth Secretary-General to Visit Fiji Islands

23 May 2000

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Mr Don McKinnon, will be visiting Fiji Islands on  23-24 May, to convey the Commonwealth's concern at the recent developments and reaffirm support for a speedy return to constitutional rule. Mr McKinnon, who is currently in Honiara, Solomon Islands, for a meeting of Commonwealth Youth Ministers, is interrupting his presence at that meeting for a joint demarche in Suva with Mr Sergio Vieira de Mello, a special envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan. The Commonwealth Secretary-General is then expected to return to Honiara, before travelling to Papua New Guinea.

In interviews with local journalists in Honiara today, Mr McKinnon expressed the hope that today's meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs in Fiji Islands would be able to resolve the difficult impasse in that country. He said that it was vital that any settlement be consistent with the Fiji Islands Constitution. He urged that all those illegally incarcerated in the Parliament building in Suva be unconditionally and immediately released.
