Advance Group of Commonwealth Observers for Zimbabwe Parliamentary Election

An Advance Group of six Commonwealth Observers, together with a support team from the Commonwealth Secretariat, will travel to Zimbabwe on Sunday 28 May. The Advance Group is part of a contingent of 44 Commonwealth Observers which will be present in Zimbabwe for the Parliamentary Election to be held on 24 and 25 June 2000.  Other members of the Observer Group are due to arrive in Zimbabwe next month.

Making the announcement today, Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon said that the formation of a Commonwealth Observer Group for the Zimbabwe elections followed from his discussions with President Mugabe in Harare earlier this month.  It had also been established by an Assessment Mission from the Commonwealth Secretariat that there was broad support within Zimbabwe for the presence of Commonwealth Observers during the elections.

Mr Christopher Laidlaw
Former diplomat and Member of Parliament, New Zealand

Ms Jocelyn Lucas
Former Chief Election Officer, Trinidad and Tobago

Mr Myroslaw Tracz
Federal Returning Officer, Canada

The Advance Group will be supported by a five-member team from the Commonwealth Secretariat.
