Commonwealth Secretary-General and Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies launch Fellowship

A Commonwealth Fellowship has been established at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS) as a result of the 1996 visit by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku. In a public lecture on the management of diversity in the contemporary world, the Secretary-General emphasised that the Islamic tradition was an important component of the diverse cultural heritage of the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth Fellowship is intended to help scholars from any part of the Commonwealth pursue their study of Islam and the Islamic world. Several Commonwealth governments have contributed to an endowment fund which, from 1999, will support short study visits to Oxford by Commonwealth citizens.
OCIS Director Dr F A Nizami, warmly welcomed this initiative by the Commonwealth Secretary-General as "an indication of the continuing vitality of the Commonwealth as a vehicle for contributing to international cultural dialogue and understanding."
The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies is an associated institution of Oxford University concerned with the encouragement of a more informed understanding of the Islamic world through good scholarship and international academic co-operation.
