Mrs Mary Robinson, the former President of Ireland and recently appointed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku will tomorrow sign a key agreement committing their two organisations to work together.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the Commonwealth Secretariat and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, which will be sealed at a ceremony in Marlborough House on Tuesday, 1 December 1998, aims at enhancing co-operation between the two organisations in areas of common interest. In the past, there has been informal co-operation between the two organisations, coupled with a regular exchange of information on their respective activities.
Chief Anyaoku said he was delighted that such an agreement had been reached. "The Commonwealth is committed to supporting the development and reinforcement of human rights throughout its membership and beyond; this is one of the fundamental principles of the Commonwealth. A deeper and more structured relationship with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights can only advance this goal."
Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, the two organisations will focus, where appropriate, on joint planning and implementation of activities, exchange of information and materials, and the sharing of skills and expertise. They will also ensure that increasingly scarce resources will be better managed by minimising duplication and at the same time by ensuring complementarity of the activities undertaken by each of them.
