President of Bangladesh to Open Meeting of Commonwealth Election Managers from Asia and the Indian Ocean

1 April 1997

Senior officials from Commonwealth election management bodies in Asia and the Indian Ocean will meet in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 7-10 April to consider ways of strengthening practical co-operation and improving the organisation of elections. The meeting, organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat in co-operation with the Bangladesh Election Commission, will be opened by the President of Bangladesh, HE Mr Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed.

The  officials will consider all the key phases in the electoral process — the preparations for the elections, the conduct of the poll, the count and post-election appraisal — in an effort to promote 'best practice' in election management. Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General (Political) Mr K Srinivasan, who will also attend the meeting, said: "We are holding this workshop because elections are at the heart of the democratic process. We therefore want to enable them to work as well as they possibly can, in this region and throughout the Commonwealth."

Chief Election Officers and other senior electoral officers from India, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh itself will be joined by Professor Birendra Prasad Mishra, Election Commissioner of Nepal, and Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman of Ghana's Electoral Commission.

Opening Session

The opening session of the workshop will take place at 9.00 a.m. on Monday 7 April 1997. Members of the Press who wish to attend should apply for press accreditation to:

The opening session will feature addresses by President of Bangladesh Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed, Chief Election Commissioner Mr Mohammad Abu Hena, representatives of participating countries and Mr Srinivasan.
