Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku will hold talks with governments and attend meetings on forestry and the role of science and technology in development this month during a four-nation trip to Africa. The Secretary-General will visit Cameroon from 4 to 8 May, Zimbabwe from 11 to 14 May, Malawi from 14 to 17 May and Kenya from 17 to 20 May.
Among the wide range of topics for discussion with governments will be the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) at Edinburgh in October.
In Cameroon, where the Government has extended an invitation to the Commonwealth to observe forthcoming Parliamentary elections on 17 May 1997, Chief Anyaoku will hold consultations with the President, Prime Minister, senior Ministers and opposition leaders.
While in Cameroon, he will also participate in the African Hearings of the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development. In Zimbabwe, the Secretary-General will deliver the keynote address at the Commonwealth Forestry Conference in Victoria Falls and present the Queen's Award for Forestry. He will also hold bilateral consultations with senior members of Government.
In Malawi, the Secretary-General will attend the 19th Meeting of the Commonwealth Science Council which is expected to be chaired by Mrs Esther Mede, Malawi's Principal Secretary, Ministry of Research and Environmental Affairs. The meeting will discuss programmes of contribution by Science and Technology to national economic development; its agenda will also focus on mainstreaming gender into science and technology.
The Secretary-General's visit to Kenya will be part of his regular pre-CHOGM consultations with Heads of Government in member countries.
