Commonwealth Invited To Observe Presidential Poll In Cameroon

2 October 1997

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, announced today that he was sending a three-member Commonwealth Secretariat Assessment Mission to Cameroon in response to the Government of Cameroon's invitation to the Commonwealth to observe the forthcoming Presidential Election on 12 October 1997.

A 12-member Commonwealth Observer Group was present in Cameroon during the Parliamentary Elections in May. In its report to the Secretary-General, the Group made a number of specific recommendations with regard to the electoral processes and structures in Cameroon. A part of the Assessment Mission's mandate will be to evaluate what action has been taken on those recommendations.

The Assessment Mission will also meet with the Government department responsible for administering the election, with the main political parties, and with other groups and associations with an interest in the electoral process.

This Assessment Mission is in line with the Secretariat's established practice in  response to an invitation from a member state to observe elections. On its return, the Secretariat team will submit to the Secretary-General its report in the light of which the Commonwealth's response to the invitation will be decided.
