In a statement to mark Dr Jagan's cremation today in his home village, Port Mourant, Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku reiterated his condolences to the Government and people of Guyana on the death of President Cheddi Jagan. The Secretary-General said the death of President Jagan was a great loss to the Commonwealth and described the late Guyanese leader as a tireless fighter for the rights of developing countries. "His deep personal commitment to the principles of democracy, good government, human rights, sustainable development and public sector reform was a shining example of a statesman who wanted the best for his country and for other developing countries within the Commonwealth and the wider world."
Chief Anyaoku said President Jagan had fought wholeheartedly for the establishment of a new global humanitarian order in which the rights of all countries, especially small developing states, would be respected. "In particular, President Jagan was a champion of the growing campaign for writing off or rescheduling the debts of least developed countries."
In a letter sent immediately after the news of Cheddi Jagan's death to President Sam Hinds, the Commonwealth Secretary-General said President Jagan would be remembered as a respected international figure who devoted many long years to the service of his country. He referred to Guyana's innovative Iwokrama Rainforest Project, to which President Jagan gave his fullest backing, and said it "reflected his passion for safeguarding the future of the world's tropical rainforests and their indigenous peoples".
