Dates Agreed for Commonwealth Talks with Nigeria

13 June 1996

The Commonwealth and Nigeria have agreed to meet on 24 and 25 June 1996 to discuss the issues which led to the suspension of Nigeria from the association in November 1995. The talks, between Commonwealth Foreign Ministers on the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) and a high-level delegation from Nigeria, will be held at Marlborough House, headquarters of the Commonwealth Secretariat, in London.

The meeting follows an exchange of correspondence between the CMAG chairman, Dr Stan Mudenge, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Zimbabwe, and the Nigerian Foreign Minister, inviting the Nigerian Government to enter into a constructive dialogue.

Commenting on the prospect of the meeting, Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku said: "I look forward to a constructive and continuing dialogue which I hope will productively address the issues of concern to the Commonwealth and the Nigerian Government."

Note to Editors:

The eight-member CMAG was established by Commonwealth Heads of Government in New Zealand in November 1995 to deal with serious or persistent violations of Commonwealth principles. Its meetings are convened by the Secretary-General and the Group includes ministerial representatives of Britain, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa and Zimbabwe. It is chaired by Dr Mudenge, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Zimbabwe, and the Vice-Chairman is Don McKinnon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand. CMAG has met twice to date, in December 1995 and in April 1996.
