Bangladesh Asks Commonwealth to Observe Elections

The Government of Bangladesh has asked the Commonwealth to observe its parliamentary election on 12 June 1996. Announcing this today, Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku said that before assembling an observer group, he was sending a planning mission, comprising officials from the Commonwealth Secretariat, to Bangladesh from Friday 10 May to ascertain that there was broad support for the presence of such a group. The mission, which will be led by Professor Reg Austin, Director of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Division, will meet representatives of the major political parties and other interested groups and also make administrative and logistical arrangements for the proposed observer group.
