The Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) South Pacific Centre conducted an intensive youth work training programme in Alotau, Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea, from 27 to 30 July 2004. This followed a request from the Government to introduce the CYP Certificate in Youth Work in Papua New Guinea.

The CYP Certificate in Youth Work focuses on basic concepts of youth work and community mobilisation. It aims to develop the leadership skills of potential youth and community leaders in rural and local communities.

"The provincial administration had been trying to establish such a kind of training network for the past five years, but was unsuccessful. This CYP Certificate tutor training course has enabled all rural training agencies and the Government to meet and plan together," said Ida Garo, Human Resource Development Manager of Milne Bay Province.

Sarah Petersen, Manager of the Milne Bay Rural Training Centre for Young Women, which engages in life skills development, remarked: "We, the non-governmental agencies, are happy that the Government has invited us to be involved in the planning and implementation of a programme that will immensely benefit our constituents."

John Gideon, a 23-year-old youth leader, said: "Youth of our province need trained leaders and workers to help them unlock their potential and motivate them to live purposeful lives."

Peceili Viriki, CYP South Pacific Centre Senior Youth Adviser, expressed the hope that the new certificate course will be made available in future to the young people in other provinces of Papua New Guinea.
