The Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Caribbean Centre funded the organisation of a week-long National Healthy Lifestyle Programme (HLP) Workshop for young sportsmen in Guyana from 6 to 11 July 2004. It involved sports enthusiasts between the ages of 18 and 24 to help them maximise their leadership potential and their personal development and wellness.
The Caribbean HLP is a 'for youth, by youth initiative' of the Organisation of Caribbean Administrators of Sport and Physical Education, the Caribbean Netball Association and the Commonwealth Sports Development Programme (CSDP).
Dwynette Eversley, Senior Programme Officer at the CYP Caribbean Centre, said at the launch: "This Healthy Lifestyle Programme is so fundamental to the development of positive and nurturing attitudes that can grow a crop of empowered, healthy, socially conscious and responsible Guyanese youth."
The programme seeks to encourage the youth of the region to take charge of their own lives in a positive way, take responsibility for their actions and be aware of the consequences, and make healthy lifestyle choices.
"At CYP we continue to play a meaningful part in acknowledging young people as trusted partners in democracy and development, as well as people with the right to life and health," added Ms Eversley.
The HLP is funded and fully supported by the CSDP, an organisation that collaborates with national sporting bodies, local governments, sports associations and sport volunteers.
The CYP Caribbean Centre has previously provided support for the conduct of HLP workshops in Guyana, as part of the Centre's outreach programme to support the empowerment and holistic development of young men and women in Guyana and in the Commonwealth Caribbean.
