Secretary-General Don McKinnon visited Melbourne on 3 June 2004 to discuss preparations for the next Commonwealth Games, to be held in the Australian city in March 2006.

He met with John Harnden, Chief Executive Officer of Melbourne 2006, and other members of the organising team. The Secretary-General will record a message of support for the Games and be given a tour of some of the venues for the XVIII Commonwealth Games.
Mr McKinnon also met with Justin Madden, Minister for Commonwealth Games, and be briefed on the Queen's Baton Relay and the Games' Cultural Programme.
Before arriving in Melbourne, the Secretary-General said: "The Melbourne Games will be a hugely exciting event -- a celebration of Commonwealth excellence and the spirit of friendship that runs through our association. From 15 to 26 March 2006, all eyes will turn to Melbourne and the city will become the heartbeat of the Commonwealth."
