Great Demand For Business Skills Training

5 May 2004

Governments in the Caribbean have requested an entrepreneurial training programme to enhance the business skills of their people. The training, to be held from 17 to 28 May 2004, is a follow-up to a similar programme held last year. The objective is to provide participants with skills, techniques, information and guidance in the development of new marketing and operating plans for their businesses.

The training programme is organised by the Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity and is funded by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation. It is part of a Regional Entrepreneurial Development Programme entitled 'Enhancing Competitiveness of Small and Medium Size Business in the Caribbean'.

Françoise Chapman, Chief Programme Officer for the Caribbean in the Commonwealth Secretariat's Governance and Institutional Development Division, said, "We held the course last year and as it is still in great demand, we are supporting another one this year. People are realising that this course could greatly enhance their businesses.

"With the onset of globalisation and implementation of new trade initiatives, businesses in the Caribbean face the challenge of adjusting their business activities to respond to market opportunities."

The training programme provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs and business managers of small and medium size businesses to review their operations, improve their competitiveness, exploit new market opportunities, increase efficiency and improve profitability.

Topics for this month's discussions will include marketing, product development and operational development. Mrs Chapman said the lecture sessions will include presentations from experts in business management, providing information on new trade opportunities and requirements. Participants will also receive individual counselling to assist the preparation of their development plans.
