Secretariat attachments for Mozambique government officials

19 February 2004

A group of four senior officials of the Government of Mozambique began a four-month attachment programme with the Commonwealth Secretariat this week. The programme has been developed in response to President Joaquim Chissano's request to the Secretary-General to help promote a better understanding of the Commonwealth and its Secretariat within Mozambique's public sector. Mozambique joined the Commonwealth in 1995.

The officers, with diverse portfolios in the Government of Mozambique, will have the opportunity to gain an insight into the Secretariat's operations and contribute to its work programme through attachment to several divisions/units.

Don McKinnon, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, said, "We hope that the officers' exposure to the Secretariat will not only enhance their professional capacity, but also enable the Secretariat to draw on their skills and experience to its own benefit. The attachment will reinforce the co-operation between the Secretariat and Mozambique and help to promote a higher Commonwealth profile in Mozambique."

This pilot programme, funded by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation and the Government of Mozambique, is expected to be repeated.
