Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba spoke to summer school students from around the world at the Commonwealth Secretariat’s headquarters in London on 28 July 2011.
The Deputy Secretary-General briefed the students studying international relations at King's College London on the Commonwealth’s role in the international community, and responded to questions on human rights, democracy, diplomacy and international relations.
The 2011 Commonwealth Day theme ‘Women as Agents of Change’ celebrates women whose work has made a positive difference to the lives of others, and emphasises the Commonwealth message that by investing in women and girls we can accelerate social, economic and political progress in our member states.
Mrs Masire-Mwamba said the Commonwealth gives voice to small member nations and draws attention to development issues, with the spotlight this year on women’s role in development through the 2011 Commonwealth Day theme: Women as Agents of Change.
“Every country that does not work on its gender profile and women’s rights is not just short changing women, it is short changing the country as a whole,” she said.
i found this to be very inspiring.it makes me want to work harder as a young girl and to encourage my peers to do the same.some day i am praying that i too will be able to tour the head quarters and also speak up on behalf of the women of my country; St.Lucia
Women are really agents of change and every nation that recognises this crucial role of women and provides the conducive environment stands to gain immensely. Women count for more than half of talents and resources required to move development and sustain it ..surely failure to recognise women means short changing the world! bravo my dear sister.
