Statement on the death of David Kato

27 January 2011

Statement by Eduardo del Buey, Official Spokesperson, Commonwealth Secretariat

“We have learned with sadness of the tragic murder of David Kato, and we are contacting Ugandan authorities to obtain more information; we know that they are investigating the killing and are resolved to bring those responsible to justice.

We note that Mr Kato has been the subject of much vitriolic media coverage due to his sexual orientation, and that this may have contributed to his violent death.

We deplore hate crimes of any nature and the vilification and targeting of gay and lesbian people run counter to the fundamental values of the Commonwealth, which include non-discrimination on any grounds.

We look forward to an early resolution of this murder.”
